Emergencies

The West Midland ambulance service can use a grid reference to find you in an emergency.

Ring 112 on your mobile or 999

Give the map reference of where you are in the form AB XXX XXX where A and B are letters and the Xs are numbers.
Example.  SP 244 545

If you have a smart phone a quick way to find the map reference of where you are standing is to use the app OS locate produced by the Ordnance Survey. You can download it from Google Play or from the link just below, but on your smart phone. It works on  Apple smart phones and those using the Android operating system. It defaults to the British Ordnance Survey grid reference. It can be changed to display logitude and latitide for use anywhere in the world.

When you open OS Locate it simply displays your map reference. It can also act as a compass.
You do not need any maps on your phone. You are still advised to equip yourself with a compass and paper map when rambling.
